Sagittarius

Overview

Sagittarius occupies the transition from autumn to winter, carrying fire through the darkening season. As mutable fire, Sagittarius represents the quest for meaning, expansion of horizons, and philosophical exploration.

The Archer symbolizes the aim toward higher truth and distant goals. Half-human and half-horse, the Centaur embodies the union of animal instinct with human aspiration.

Ptolemy places Sagittarius on the winter circle in the fire triplicity: "Aries is on the equinoctial circle, Leo on the summer, and Sagittarius on the winter circle."

Element: Fire

Sagittarius belongs to the fire triplicity with Aries and Leo. Ptolemy describes: "The first triangle, or triplicity, is formed by three masculine signs, Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, having the Sun, Jupiter, and Mars as lords by house."

The fire element manifests in Sagittarius as enthusiasm for exploration, optimistic faith, and the capacity to inspire others with vision and meaning.

"This triplicity is principally northern, owing to the concurrent dominion of Jupiter, who is fruitful and airy."

Modality: Mutable

As a mutable sign, Sagittarius bridges autumn and winter. Ptolemy explains that bicorporeal signs "participate in the constitutional properties of both" fixed and cardinal qualities.

This transitional nature gives Sagittarius its restlessness, adaptability, and constant seeking of new horizons.

Ruling Planet: Jupiter

Jupiter rules Sagittarius as its day house (with Pisces as the night house). Ptolemy describes Jupiter: "Jupiter revolves in an intermediate sphere between the extreme cold of Saturn and the burning heat of Mars, and has consequently a temperate influence: he therefore at once promotes both warmth and moisture."

"Jupiter has a favourable temperament... These signs are airy and fruitful, in consequence of their trinal distance from the houses of the luminaries."

Through Sagittarius, Jupiter expresses as philosophical wisdom, expansive optimism, and the pursuit of meaning.

Exaltation

Sagittarius has no planetary exaltation in Ptolemy's system, allowing Jupiter's beneficent rulership to express without complication.

Some later traditions associated the South Node with Sagittarius, but classical sources leave this sign under Jupiter's guidance alone.

Ptolemy describes Sagittarius: "The stars at the point of the arrow in Sagittarius have influence similar to that of Mars and the Moon: those on the bow, and at the grasp of the hand, act like Jupiter and Mars."

"The nebula in the face is like the Sun and Mars: those in the waist and in the back resemble Jupiter, and also Mercury moderately: those in the feet, Jupiter and Saturn: the four-sided figure in the tail is similar to Venus, and in some degree to Saturn."
