Overview
Leo occupies the most solar position in the zodiac, ruled by the Sun itself and positioned at the height of summer's heat. Ptolemy explains: "Cancer and Leo are the most northerly of all the twelve signs; they approach nearer than the other signs to the zenith of this part of the earth, and thereby cause warmth and heat."
As the fixed fire sign, Leo represents the sustained expression of solar power—creativity, self-expression, and the vital force. The Lion symbolizes nobility, courage, and the natural authority of leadership.
Leo holds the Sun's only domicile: "they are consequently appropriated as houses for the two principal and greater luminaries; Leo for the Sun, as being masculine."
Element: Fire
Leo belongs to the fire triplicity with Aries and Sagittarius. Ptolemy describes: "The first triangle, or triplicity, is formed by three masculine signs, Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, having the Sun, Jupiter, and Mars as lords by house."
"Aries is on the equinoctial circle, Leo on the summer, and Sagittarius on the winter circle." Leo's position on the summer circle places it at the peak of solar influence.
The fire element manifests in Leo as creative self-expression, generosity, and the capacity to inspire and lead others.
Modality: Fixed
As a fixed sign, Leo stabilizes the summer season when solar power is at its most established. Ptolemy explains that fixed signs maintain the seasonal quality "more firmly established" after the cardinal sign initiates it.
The fixed quality gives Leo its characteristic constancy, loyalty, and determination. Where Aries initiates fire, Leo sustains it with enduring radiance.
Ruling Planet: Sun
The Sun rules Leo as its sole domicile. Ptolemy describes the Sun: "The Sun is found to produce heat and moderate dryness. His magnitude, and the changes which he so evidently makes in the seasons, render his power more plainly perceptible than that of the other heavenly bodies."
The Sun's rulership makes Leo the most purely solar of all signs—vital, radiant, and central to the entire system.
Exaltation
Leo has no planetary exaltation in Ptolemy's system, as the Sun's rulership already provides maximum dignity. This allows the solar influence to express without the complication of an exalted planet.
Some later traditions associated various points with Leo, but the classical system leaves this sign under the Sun's undivided governance.
The Fixed Stars in Leo
Ptolemy describes Leo's stars: "Of the stars in Leo, two in the head are like Saturn and partly like Mars. The three in the neck are like Saturn, and in some degree like Mercury."
"The bright one in the heart, called Regulus, agrees with Mars and Jupiter. Those in the loins, and the bright one in the tail, are like Saturn and Venus: those in the thighs resemble Venus, and, in some degree, Mercury."
Regulus, the "heart of the Lion," is among the four Royal Stars of ancient astronomy.
"The bright one in the heart, called Regulus, agrees with Mars and Jupiter. Those in the loins, and the bright one in the tail, are like Saturn and Venus." — Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos, Book I, Chapter IX
